about

I wrote this song after my college graduation in May 2007. I continued writing it through that summer. I called it Eliot because I had very little desire to hide my love for Elliott Smith and his total influence on my writing. The song was inspired by three people. One, a friend with destructive impulses. The other, a man who was living in the campground I worked at, who had burned his Alcoholics Anonymous handbook in his fire pit, along with a pair of reading glasses (burned but not beyond all recognition. I found these items when I was cleaning the site). And by Elliott Smith, whose beautiful but self-harm-threatening lyrics I still struggle with. This recording was made in July 2010.

lyrics

Another travesty
Nothing left to see
So I will take myself and go
But I don't think you should be in here alone

You've been setting fire
To your vision and salvation
And a part of you is hanging nearby
Waiting to be reconciled
With quiet peaceful despair
Aim for your head and things will start to move

And you know they loved you
For just how sick you were
And all they thought you would do

And you know they loved you
For just how sick you were
And all they thought you could do
